Most of the subjects in my portraits look away
from the viewer, hiding their faces in shadows. They don't confront,
they don't
stare back, giving you time to study them, reading whatever
you want into them.
I paint realism to better understand the
laws of visual perception; how our eyes process light. Without
light, there would be no color,
no atmosphere, no value. I trust self evaluation. I trust my
passion for classic techniques, my purpose.
Following the examples
of the 'Old Masters', I utilize full pencil rendering, a detailed
monochromatic underpainting, and countless
layers of transparent glazes. I draw inspiration from artists
like Jans Vermeer, Norman Rockwell, Odd Nerdrum and Chuck Close.
A
portrait painting is timeless; the subject never ages, the
subject never dies. |
